November Weekends in North Branford, Killingworth, Guilford and Madison, CT

What a November Weekend Looks Like in North Branford, Killingworth, Guilford and Madison

What is it like to live in North Branford, CT? Quiet, wooded and close to the trail. North Branford is where you can park in a cul-de-sac, walk a loop that crosses an old trolley line, and be back for lunch. Its neighbors to the east and south, Killingworth, Guilford and Madison, each have a slightly different Saturday. Here's what the first November weekend of the year feels like in all four.

The clocks went back yesterday, and if you live on the Connecticut shoreline you already know what that means: the afternoon shrinks. Suddenly a weekend plan has a deadline, and it's called sunset. I think November is the most honest month for finding out how a town actually lives, because nobody is putting on a show. The beaches are empty, the leaves are mostly down, and you can see which places people really use.

So I'm not going to hand you a list of "best of" anything. This is just what a November weekend looks like around here, town by town, starting in North Branford.

North Branford: park the car, take the loop

Start the morning at North Farms Park, a 77-acre town park on the Branford River with a playground, sports fields, a picnic pavilion and a handful of short marked trails. It's passive use only, and dogs are welcome on a leash. It's the kind of park that works whether you have twenty minutes or two hours, which is more valuable than it sounds.

If you'd rather have something with a little more climb, the Notch Hill Brook Trail starts on town property, crosses a historic defunct trolley line, and turns into a loop on land held by the North Branford Land Conservation Trust. It runs about a mile and a half round trip and is rated moderate. You park in the cul-de-sac at the end of Ciro Road, and leashed dogs are fine. In November, with the canopy open, you can actually see the shape of the land. That's the point.

What I notice about North Branford on a weekend is how much of it is space. Roads wind, and the working farms the town talks about are part of the landscape rather than a destination. If your idea of a good Saturday is to be outside in boots by nine and home by noon, it's worth a drive-through before you ever look at a listing.

Killingworth: the long walk

Head north and you reach Killingworth, which is the quietest of the six towns I work in. The anchor here is Chatfield Hollow State Park at 381 Route 80, open daily from 8 a.m. to sunset year-round, with about 18 miles of trails and Schreeder Pond at the center. In summer it's busy. In November it's yours.

Because the park closes at sunset, and sunset is now early, plan the walk for late morning and leave the last hour for the drive home. That's a small thing, but it's exactly the kind of detail you learn by living here, and it changes how a weekend feels.

Guilford: the errand run that turns into an outing

Down on the Guilford side, the rhythm is more about stops. Country Farms II on the Boston Post Road is the classic: produce and local pies most of the year, and as the season turns, wreaths and trees. I'm one of those people who can't drive past without going in "just for a minute." Pair that with a loop through the woods and you've built a weekend without making a single reservation.

Madison: the garden and the open field

Madison's version starts at Bauer Park, 257 Copse Road, a historic town farm with gardens and nature programs. It's a different mood from the preserves up north, more open and more cultivated, and a good place to see what Madison looks like once the crowds are gone. Check with the town before you go for current hours and access.

Why I'm writing about weekends

Because it's the part of buying a home nobody can put in a listing. You can compare square footage and taxes on a screen. You can't compare what a Saturday morning feels like, and for most people that's the real reason to choose one town over another.

If you're thinking about a move, early winter is a good time to do this homework. There's less competition for your attention, the roads are quiet, and you'll see each town as it really is. My suggestion: pick two of the four above, visit each on a weekend morning, and notice where you wanted to stay longer. Then tell me about it.

What I'd do this weekend

→ Pick one trail and one errand in the same town, and go on a weekend morning.

→ Leave yourself an hour of daylight at the end. The sun sets early now.

→ Write down where you wanted to linger. That's usually your answer.
